Overview
As a Portable Extinguisher Technician at EPOSD, you will be responsible for inspecting, maintaining, recharging, and installing portable fire extinguishers to ensure compliance with NFPA 10 and local fire codes. This role requires technical expertise in fire extinguisher types, servicing procedures, and proper documentation. Additionally, you will be responsible for emergency call-outs, customer service, and assisting with fire suppression-related tasks.

Job Duties
Fire Extinguisher Inspections & Testing

Perform routine inspections of portable fire extinguishers per NFPA 10 and local regulations.

Verify extinguisher type, pressure, weight, and placement for compliance.

Ensure all extinguishers are properly tagged, documented, and ready for use.

Identify and report any deficiencies, expired units, or necessary replacements.
-
Generate inspection reports and provide recommendations for corrective actions.
On-Call Emergency Response

Respond to after-hours emergency service calls for extinguisher-related issues.

Replace discharged or damaged extinguishers as needed.
-
Ensure immediate compliance by providing temporary or permanent solutions.

Maintain communication with clients and EPOSD management regarding emergency services.
General Service Work & Maintenance
-
Perform recharging, hydrostatic testing, and maintenance of various extinguisher types.

Disassemble, inspect, clean, and replace components as required.
-
Verify proper reassembly and conduct final operational tests.

Ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications and NFPA requirements.
Fire Extinguisher Installation & Placement
-
Install new and replacement fire extinguishers in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.

Mount extinguishers at proper heights and locations per fire code requirements.

Verify accessibility and provide customer education on proper usage.

Ensure installation compliance with NFPA standards and project specifications.
Shop Work & Equipment Preparation

Assist in assembling, recharging, and staging extinguishers for service calls.
-
Maintain an organized workspace with tools, testing equipment, and spare parts.
-
Perform quality control checks on extinguishers before deployment.
-
Ensure proper disposal of expired or damaged extinguishers.
Assisting with Fire Suppression-Related Services

Support technicians in servicing kitchen hood suppression systems when needed.

Provide backup assistance for suppression system inspections and maintenance.

Ensure proper documentation and compliance for all serviced systems.
Administrative Responsibilities & Communication
-
Check in at the shop at 8 AM with your immediate manager to review assignments.

Keep your manager informed of any scope changes via email, text, or phone call.
-
Fill out and submit daily reports, ensuring they are reviewed and signed.
-
Complete a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) before starting work on-site.
-
Provide a briefing before leaving the shop and update your manager as needed.
-
Inform your manager when arriving and leaving job sites to maintain clear communication.

Maintain accurate documentation, including inspection logs, service reports, and compliance records.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs. regularly

Comfortable working on ladders, scaffolding, and lifts

Ability to work in commercial, industrial, and outdoor environments
Other Requirements

Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record

Ability to pass a background check and drug screening

Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends as needed

Strong verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members, clients, and inspectors

Must be reliable, punctual, and detail-oriented

Must be willing to travel in and out of sate as needed
